چکیده

In spite of the increase in knowledge derived from hepatic biopsy in recent years, studies on hepatic morphopathology in leprosy are not numerous. Some investigations, however, (1 , 3, G, 8.9, ]2, 14, 15, 16, 17,18, 19, 20) have dealt with the description of hepatic lesions in leprosy and the frequency with which they occur. Others (2, 4.5. 7. 11 etc.) have attempted to establish more concrete anatomicoclinical relationships and to obtain results that are of practical importance in understanding hepatic lesions. A review of these studies indicates (1) that hepatic involvement is frequent in lepromatous leprosy and deserves attention by leprologists, (2) that hepatic involvement in tuberculoid, dimorphous and indeterminate forms is inconstant, of little or no speci6city, and therefore doubtful, and finally (3) that a knowledge of hepatic morphopathology can be useful for understanding the evolution of disease in leprosy patients. These possibilities have stimulated us to review our autopsy material with a view to bringing our experience to bear on the problem of hepatic morphopathology in leprosy.

Langerhans Cells in Skin Lesions of Leprosy

Background: Langerhans cells are important in the pathogenesis of leprosy.  A recent study reported that these cells were almost absent in the epidermis overlying lepromatous lesions. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between the number of Langerhans cells and the histopathologic spectrum of lesions in patients with leprosy. Methods: An immunohistochemical staining for S100 prot...

Hepatocyte functional state. Quantitative evaluation with I-131 rose bengal in lepromatous leprosy patients.

Relatively little interes t is evident in the study of visceral manifes tations of leprosy, in spi te of their clinical importance ( 1), The liver might be expected to be the organ most freguently affected; it is responsible for plasma protein alterations, e.g. , effective albumin reduction and globulin increase, Histologic reports show that hepatic lesions in lepromatous leprosy are characteri...

Hepatic involvement in lepromatous leprosy.

Hepatic involvement in a lepromatous leprosy (LL) patient is reported. The serum concentrations of aminotransferases were much higher than previously described in the leprosy literature. Other causes for hepatic damage were ruled out. Such hepatic involvement and elevation of aminotransferases have never been described in leprosy.

Suppressor T lymphocytes from lepromatous leprosy skin lesions.

The immune response in leprosy forms a spectrum with lepromatous leprosy patients exhibiting specific unresponsiveness to antigens of Mycobacterium leprae. This unresponsiveness is thought to be related to the prevalence of T8-positive lymphocyte in these lepromatous lesions. To analyze the immunoregulatory function of these T8 cells, we developed simple procedures to extract lymphocytes from s...

Learning from lesions: patterns of tissue inflammation in leprosy.

The clinical forms of leprosy constitute a spectrum that correlates closely with the degree of cell-mediated immunity. Patients with tuberculoid leprosy develop strong cell-mediated responses and have only a few, localized lesions, whereas patients with multibacillary lepromatous leprosy are specifically unresponsive to antigens of Myobacterium leprae. T cells of the CD4+ subset predominate in ...
